Understanding the court cards
The Court Cards are an important part of the Minor Arcana and represent people, personalities, behaviors, attitudes, and different stages of personal growth. Consisting of 16 cards, the Court Cards include the Page, Knight, Queen, and King in each of the four suits—Cups, Wands, Swords, and Pentacles.
While the numbered Minor Arcana cards often describe everyday situations, experiences, and challenges, Court Cards bring a more personal element to a Tarot reading. They can represent someone in your life, your own personality, the way you are approaching a situation, or a quality you may need to develop.
The four Court Card levels can be understood as different stages of experience and expression:
Page – Learning & Discovery
Pages represent curiosity, learning, new experiences, messages, and fresh energy. They often appear when you are beginning something, exploring an idea, developing a skill, or approaching a situation with an open mind.
Examples: Starting a new course, receiving important news, exploring a new interest, learning from an experience, discovering your potential, or beginning a new chapter.
Knight – Action & Movement
Knights represent action, movement, ambition, pursuit, and the desire to move forward. They bring energy to the suit they belong to and can show a person or situation that is actively developing.
Examples: Chasing a goal, taking action on an idea, pursuing love, making a career move, standing up for yourself, travelling, or moving quickly toward an opportunity.
Queen – Understanding & Inner Strength
Queens represent maturity, confidence, intuition, understanding, and the ability to express the qualities of their suit from within. They often encourage you to trust yourself, understand your emotions, and recognize your own strengths.
Examples: Setting healthy boundaries, trusting your intuition, becoming emotionally mature, supporting others, managing responsibilities, expressing creativity, or becoming more confident in yourself.
King – Leadership & Mastery
Kings represent experience, leadership, responsibility, authority, and mastery. They often show someone who has developed a strong understanding of their suit and knows how to use that energy with confidence and wisdom.
Examples: Taking leadership, managing a business, making mature decisions, becoming financially responsible, handling emotions wisely, using knowledge effectively, or guiding others.
The Court Cards are also influenced by the four Tarot suits, giving each Page, Knight, Queen, and King a different personality and area of focus:
Cups – Emotions & Relationships
Cups bring emotional, intuitive, caring, and relationship-focused energy to the Court Cards. They can represent people who are compassionate, sensitive, romantic, creative, or deeply connected to their feelings.
Wands – Passion & Action
Wands bring confidence, creativity, enthusiasm, ambition, and adventurous energy. These Court Cards may represent people who are energetic, independent, passionate, and motivated to follow their goals.
Swords – Thoughts & Communication
Swords bring intellectual, analytical, direct, and communicative energy. These Court Cards can represent people who value truth, logic, clear thinking, honest communication, and making informed decisions.
Pentacles – Career & Stability
Pentacles bring practical, grounded, responsible, and stable energy. These Court Cards can represent people focused on career, money, education, security, health, and building a comfortable future.
Together, the Page, Knight, Queen, and King show different ways of experiencing and expressing the energy of each suit. A Page may be learning, a Knight may be taking action, a Queen may be developing inner understanding, while a King may be expressing experience and leadership.
When a Court Card appears in a Tarot reading, it does not always represent another person. It may describe you, someone around you, a personality trait, a behavior, or an energy that needs your attention. Looking at the Court Card together with its suit and the surrounding cards can help you understand its message more clearly.
Court Cards remind us that Tarot is not only about what happens in our lives but also about how we think, feel, behave, communicate, and grow through those experiences. They can help you recognize the qualities you already carry and the qualities you may be ready to develop as you move forward.
